Abstract

Drawing upon a wide range of historical sources, this article reconstructs the life and career of Doãn Uẩn, an outstanding military commander, a talented high-ranking mandarin, and a man renowned for his integrity and significant contributions to the defense of the northern and southern frontiers of the country. He served as an official for more than twenty years, devoting himself wholeheartedly to the reigns of Emperors Minh Mệnh, Thiệu Trị, and Tự Đức. Doãn Uẩn was a loyal and diligent servant of the Nguyễn court, while also being a compassionate yet strict father and a moral example for his descendants to follow. The father and son of the Doãn family truly embodied the saying “a family united in loyalty and filial piety”: the father passed away while still in office, and the son died heroically and courageously on the battlefield. Doãn Uẩn deserves recognition as a representative historical figure of the Nguyễn dynasty.
