Abstract

The Nguyen Dynasty was established and developed strongly in the early 19th century. Diplomatic relations between the Nguyen Dynasty and mainland Southeast Asian countries also had shifted, especially with Siam, revolving around the issue of expanding influence in Cambodia and Laos. These complex disputes led to the outbreak of wars, including that between 1833 and 1834. The Kingdom of Siam, as a powerful monarchy in 19th century Southeast Asia, aimed to expand its territory to the east, directly threatening Nguyen’s influence in Cambodia. The conflict between the two countries led to war in 1833, while a large Siamese army to attack the southwestern Vietnam. The Nguyen Dynasty quickly waged a war of self-defense and its decisive victory over Siam was at Vam Nao - Co Hu. This triumph forced Siam to withdraw from the Southwestern Vietnam and also Cambodia, helping the Nguyen court not only firmly protect its borders and territory but also expand influence in Cambodia. The Vam Nao - Co Hu victory was a major battle in the 19th Vietnamese history against foreign invaders, but it has not been properly evaluated for its stature and historical significance.
