Abstract

During the 16th - 18th centuries, the process of southward movement expanded Vietnamese expansion to the Inner Region. Apart from other forms of religious practices, such as Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism, ancestor worship continues to be an important spiritual foundation for the Nguyen government and the migrated community. By analyzing various historical sources, this article aims to understand the tradition of ancestor worship of the Nguyen Cochinchina in daily practice and governmental policy toward the cult between 1558 and 1777. Finally, it makes an initial assessment of the characteristics and practices of the cult of the Nguyen lord's government.
