In the Medieval period, maritime navigation was profoundly affected by climate and ocean currents, and maritime accidents occurred in high frequency. They appeared frequently in historical documents in China, Japan and Vietnam, in which a considerable number showed Vietnamese-involved incidents. The formation and application of the maritime rescue system in East Asia countries helped Vietnamese victims with the opportunity of a safe home-returning. This article focus on clarifying the maritime rescue policy of the Qing dynasty (China) towards Vietnamese victims, their process of home-returning and the attitude of the Nguyen dynasty (Vietnam) towards these incidents. This article also contributes to clarifying the image of Vietnamese people abroad as well as the diplomatic relations between Vietnam and China in the first half of the 19th century.
