The social transformation of Tu Liem district (Hanoi) from 1996 to 2013 in the context of urbanization

Abstract

Tu Liem, a western district of Hanoi, has a favourable location for economic exchange and development by connecting not only with the northern provinces and cities but also with the whole country. Thus, it has opportunities to attract investment projects that contribute to speeding up the economic and social development of the district. Implementing the policy and renovation policy of Hanoi City in general and Tu Liem district in particular, and under the impact of urbanization, the economy of Tu Liem has undergone rapid changes between 1996 and 2013. The changes include rapid and comprehensive development that leads Tu Liem among the fastest urbanized regions of Hanoi. Economic transformation improves the cultural and social life of Tu Liem district. This article focuses on presenting the social change in Tu Liem district from 1996 to 2013 in the context of urbanization in several areas, such as demography, labour employment, education, healthcare, people's lives, and the environment. From there, it recognizes the achievements of the local cultural and social development as well as identifies some remaining issues that are presented along the process of urbanization.
