Determining the year of birth and death of Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac

Abstract

Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac is not only a great physician with tremendous contributions to Vietnamese medicine but also a great writer and cultural writer with outstanding contributions to Vietnamese history and culture. However, up to now, his biography still has some issues that have not been clearly defined, especially the year of his birth. Through a survey of related documents such as the genealogy of the Le Huu family in both his homeland and his motherland, the article "Tu Tu" (Foreword self-written) at the beginning of the book Tan Tuyen Hai Thuong Lan Ong y Tong Tam linh toan trat, Thuong Kinh Ky su, and documents were written about Lan Ong, we have concluded that the year of his birth was is 1724 and the year of death is 1791. Not only that, through these data, the year of birth and the year of death of Dr Le Huu Muu (1675-1743), Le Huu Trac's father has also been identified, different from the information in the Le Huu family genealogy.
