The Inner Region (Dang Trong), under the rule of Nguyen lords, was not only a land of large areas of sea and islands but also covered by many bays, lagoons, rivers, canals, ponds and lakes. It is a living space, a favourable environment for the growth and development of aquatic species, including those inhabited in freshwater, brackish water and salt water, in which there are many species known as delicious, nutritious and economical. Under the rule of Nguyen lords, Dang Trong was famous for fishing activities and the exploitation of aquatic resources. To catch and exploit marine species, the inhabitants of Dang Trong used different fishing gear and methods, depending on the habitat and aquatic species. The Nguyen Lords manage and regulate different tax rates for the lagoons, communes and fishermen.
