Some new factors of the agricultural economy in early 20th century Vinh Yen province

Abstract

In 1890, Vinh Yen first appeared in Vietnamese history. The name is derived from the first two characters of two administrative units, Vinh Tuong and Yen Lac. After the Patenôtre treaty (1884) the Indochina Union started to exploit the region’s natural resources. In Vinh Yen province, a number of new agricultural policies to take advantage of the area’s economic benefits were implemented. As a result, Vinh Yen’s agrarian economy during the early 20th century advanced with new developments in terms of cultivating activities, plantation economy and modern hydraulic system. In short, the investigation of new economic factors in Vinh Yen’s agriculture contributes significantly to the understanding of Vinh Yen economy in particular and Tonkin in general in the early 20th century.
