Abstract

This article reviews the major achievements of the Institute of History during its seventy years of development (1953-2023), affirming its status as Vietnam’s leading historical research institution. Throughout this period, the Institute implemented numerous fundamental and specialised research programmes on Vietnamese history, world history, historical methodology, culture, economics, society, international relations, the working class, rural areas, the peasantry, and national liberation movements. It led the compilation of major general histories and valuable specialised monographs, most notably the fifteen-volume History of Vietnam. The Institute also collected, translated, and published a wide range of Hán-Nôm historical sources and compiled reference works for research and teaching. In addition, it actively organised academic conferences, promoted domestic and international cooperation, and participated in the appraisal of research programmes and projects, thereby providing scholarly foundations for policymaking and the protection of national sovereignty. These achievements have consolidated the Institute’s standing and prestige and have made important contributions to the development of Vietnamese historiography and to the cause of national construction and defence.
