Abstract

With the military victories of the Vietnamese revolutionary forces in 1970 and 1971, the US strategy of "Vietnamization" was defeated in a fundamental step. The Vietnamese Revolution had favourable conditions and opportunities for a strategic offensive in 1972. Implementing the direction of the Politburo and the Operational Plan of the Standing Committee of Zone V, Binh Dinh Provincial Party Committee promptly directed the army and people of the whole province to launch the 1972 spring-summer strategic offensive. The operation aimed to destroy and disintegrate the army of the Republic of Vietnam and to break apart its defence and control system. In many localities throughout the province, revolutionary forces liberated, controlled key areas, and fundamentally defeated Saigon’s program of "rural pacification". This victory made an important contribution to the defeat of the US strategy of "Vietnamization".
