Abstract

Can Tho has long been considered the “Western capital” - the capital of the West. Compared to other lands in the South such as Gia Dinh, Dong Nai, Ha Tien... Can Tho was reclaimed relatively late, but from the middle of the seventeenth century onwards, the Vietnamese people and other communities have been living there. More and more people come here to settle down due to the favorable conditions of this land. By the end of the 18th century, in the context of Vietnam's turbulent situation, the land of Tran Giang (old Can Tho) played an increasingly important role and received more attention for construction. During the French colonial period (1867-1945), the colonial government recognized the critical position of Can Tho, so it had policies to build Can Tho into the center of the colonial Southwest.
