Abstract

This paper provides information about Britain’s opinions, policies and activities towards the French return to Indochina after World War II. Although British activities in Cochinchina contributed to the change Indochinese revolutionary movement in Indochina this subject has not received high attention from Vietnamese scholars. As a result, it is necessary to have fundamental research on this topic. Members of the British government initially disagreed with each other about the Frech power in Indochina. However, due to the Anglo-French alliance and the British own colonial benefits in Southeast Asia, Britain accepted that France could replace the British role in conducting the trusteeship in Indochina and re-invaded Vietnam. By doing this, Britain partly caused the first Indochina War (1946-1954).
