Abstract

This article clarifies the importance of the An Giang region from its establishment (XVII-XVIII centuries) to the French conquest of southern Vietnam in 1867. An Giang’s annexation to the Nguyen Cochinchina was relatively late, compared to Gia Dinh, Ha Tien, and Long Ho. However, as part of Dang Trong and of the unified Dai Nam in the latter period, An Giang played a significant role in the Vietnamese strategy of frontier security. The Cochinchina government and the Hue court had many policies to expand territorial reclamations, protect settlers, and proclaim the sovereignty of the new land against external threats.
