Abstract

The character Khuc Thi Ngoc, also known by the title Princess Quynh Hoa, frequently appears in various legends, folktales, and popular beliefs. In these unofficial historical accounts, she is said to have familial ties with the Khuc clan, being the daughter of Khuc Thua Du, the sister of Khuc Hao, and contributing significantly to the early autonomy efforts of the Khuc family in the 10th century. However, records from official historical sources provide only scant references to this figure. By comparing official historical sources and folk legends, this article seeks to clarify the historical authenticity of Khuc Thi Ngoc, enabling a more appropriate evaluation of her role in the context of Vietnam's early autonomy in the 10th century - a period regarded as a pivotal turning point in the nation's struggle for independence. Can it be affirmed that she was indeed a historical figure from the early 10th century, or should she instead be viewed as a symbolic representation of the culture and tradition of resistance embodied by the Vietnamese people, with Khuc Thi Ngoc serving as a representative figure?).
